/\/\/\Y/\

June 21, 2010

I do admit I have a soft spot of M.I.A.

Something about her devil-may-care-rebel-baby attitude has kept me in tune for her last two albums and now the new one, /\/\/\Y/\. The title of her new album is basically her name, Maya, spelled using a mixture of forward and backward slashes from the keyboard. Quite banally smart.

Her new one was recently slammed by nytimes for being noise and i couldn’t disagree more. M.I.A. has always been known for her rambunctious musical productions along with lyrics peppered with immigration stories and love as well. /\/\/\Y/\ is no different, however, I do find that this is a much more mature and mellow sounding M.I.A. record compared to Arular and Kala. Much less tongue-in-cheek but more so serious laid back musings of love and politics in the 21st century along with Twitter and iPhone references present in the song XXXO.

I am excited for this release and can’t wait to get my hands on the physical copy.

Time to revitalise this space.

Kelis’ new one should do the trick.
