rock steady black coffee

November 19, 2006

after pandering back and forth whether or not to do this, i decided to go on ahead with it.

now all saints have received much hype about their return to the pop scene. and the hype was put to rest with the release of their first single, rock steady. and i must say it was a very different sounding all saints altogther. but detractors as they will always be, have compared their new sound to groups like girls aloud and sugababes. and i must admit,  leaving the pop scene for so long have definitely given rise to such new sounding girl groups such as girls aloud (think spice girls v.2 with an edgier sound). but i would like to tell these detractors, that all saints are just picking up from where they left off. and these new sounding girl groups are something to competite with but are in different leagues of their own. i would also say that the all saints sound has certainly evolved. so has the sounds of sugababes and say, girls aloud.

then comes the album studio 1. this is a very intriguing album i must say. on first listen, tracks almost sound the same as each other. giving the impression that the girls did not take effort at all in this album. opener rock steady was a well suited opener then chick fit continues the roll with on and on. then scar comes on and you think i’ve heard this before. but give it time, cos studio 1 is a grower. scar though at first sounds similar to rock steady is actually quite the track. with its lazy beat and recurrent laughter of someone makes for a very quirky track. i would give props for all saints certainly sounds very different on this new one. and the girls never fail to churn songs that are lyrically different. sure there are no black coffee or pure shores recurrence on this album and i am thinking its cos they did not work with william orbit on this one. but the album gels and works after a few listens.

maybe i forced myself to like this album cos all saints really is a credible girl group from the ex london records. more than that, i was hoping for this comeback to work at the same time not really work cos all saints derseve indie status. and more over, their solo efforts were not really credible shit, safe maybe shaznay.

perfect swerve

regulation is a term loosely used on the young. since when did we regulate the choices we make, the people we choose to go out with or the stuff we choose to buy and put into our pockets.

peeved could be a word used to decribe our sometimes blase and nondescript attitudes. and we do not sometime stretch the limits of our talents. but yet we get that alot in the land of the United States.

revolutionary strikes, could be sometimes said of the bouts of “outspoken-ness” we experience in our life of normalcy. but yet when we have deep passion or just the right calibre to be, we are shunned away because our academic qualities do not match up. they are called options, we are given alternative options. what is so wrong about taking them on?

“fuck you” are the only two proper expletives that can sum up this post. and to those companies who shun away pure talent and forgo people with passion just because we do not have the proper academic credentials.

vertigo is a privilege.

we were given tartan to sit on. it grazed our bottoms and imprinted its beige shade on us.  fresh off the boat that is.

sometimes it is better to just sum up a day injected with expletives. it just sounds better and people get the idea of how the day went.

gallery visits should happen more oft.

aussie aussie aussie!

November 7, 2006

of late, things at my so-called workplace of the coming next 1year plus has been rather bland and unexciting. working the weekend shifts spells dry boredom mixed with the international moviefare, which can be bordering disgust sometimes. i am not dissing international movies in general, just the certain kind.

safe, some weekends where watching the local telly brings about the occasional backdated great movie. a few weeks ago the film bandits was screened, which had the amazing cate blanchett, bruce willis and billy-bob thorton. sleek and witty this film was that it got everyone hooked. and it was truly a great movie that i had not given thought for.

this weekend, was aussie fanfare. the film in review is dirty deeds(as pictured). i only watched this film because of toni collette for which she had a minimal but very important role. this film was set all the way back in the 60’s where the mobs were rife in the US. the same could be said for the land down under. the thing about these mobs were that they robbed and owned casino slot machines. the amazing thing about this truly underrated film was that, it was set in the 60’s but shot in 2002. and they have really stuck with the 60’s theme. with the showing and using of old airplane models from pan am and qantas. it was so convincing that i truly thought the film was really shot in the 60’s and toni collette was then a struggling young actress. but alas, when the credits rolled it showed 2002 that got me gaping.

the plot to this movie was certainly quite confusing injected with really thick and convincing aussie accents from the US cast of sam neil and more. but in the end, bloodshed and stolen mistresses make the end of this movie, as with all mob movies. but i guess the jewel of this movie was the time it was set and shot in. and till today i am still in awe of how accurate the director had protrayed australia in the 60s.

i am def going to get the dvds for these films. it would make a great collection of sunday weekend movies. hmm i wonder what would be this weekend.

guerrilla marketing!

November 1, 2006

“the horror!”

let me put my two cents or more worth of opinion, into the slot machine and see them go!

the town area has to be the new dangerzone du jour. how so? i have only two words to insert here “guerrilla marketing”.

picture this, pre-pubescent teens dressed in what they call their “best” (but its actually mediocre shit), lurking like hungry wolves waiting for little red riding hoods of sorts to walk by. with seedy eyes and faux official notepads in hands, they wait and wait. the wolf sees the prey,  and strikes! in terms of reality, they spot a pretty being (inverted commas should be inserted in some) and strike. and strike they do, not your normal “hello, will you be interested?” but with over-zealous hands extended and exaggerated shakings they say “CAN I HAVE FIVE MINUTES OF YOUR TIME PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!”, on repeat that is. they press on just like the wolves who don’t get the prey at first strike. but insistence its not their forte, more like scaring the shit out of. till the person says a “NO!” straight up and walks off.  go figure i say, don’t blame GEMS in this context.

now whoever thought guerrilla marketing could reach such a level of, desperation? they do say, “step out of the box”, but not to that extent. nothing of that sort happened to me of course, but seeing people around getting hassled in such a way is disturbing bordering disgust. please, people attached to such agencies, review your people and their choices of approaching.

the slot machines rolls to a complete seqeunce, alas, it does not match. you only get a nickel. ka-ching!
