Sia – Buttons

July 26, 2007

Australian native Sia is back with her new song, Buttons with much anticipation after the release of her critically and hugely successful album Colour the Small One. With Colour the Small One, she established herself as a emotionally driven singer, with songs like Breathe Me, which was featured in the Six Feet Under soundtrack.

Colour the Small One was a far cry from her debut album, Healing is Difficult. Which was heavy in sound production and a little more flamboyant though the title otherwise suggests. If you took a listen to Healing is Difficult you would know what i mean.

With Buttons you see Sia moving into different pastures, off her upcoming album, Some People have Real Problems. She has been sounding more upbeat with her music arrangements and lyrics. Buttons is quite the thumper of a track. She sings more clearly on this one too. The video however is one super quirky one. See for yourself:

Rilo Kiley

July 24, 2007

Super-power indie band, Rilo Kiley is finally back with new material. Their last effort was in 2004 titled More Adventurous.

Back with a new single and album, titled The Moneymaker and Under the Blacklight respectively, Rilo Kiley has certainly earned the title Super-power indie band. Covering many genres of rock, pop and soul thanks to the chemistry of lead singer Jenny Lewis and her band mates. More recently they were made aware to the mainstream crowd thanks to their song Portion For Foxes who made it onto the hit show, Grey’s Anatomy.

The Moneymaker is one hell of a foot stomper and party grinder. It borders on almost sounding very The White Stripes-ish and is quite reminiscent of Garbage minus the purring and scratching of frontwoman Shirley Manson. Jenny Lewis manages to pull off a whole different kind of sexiness, by letting her voice work instead of pulling off clothes. She’d rather leave that to the concept of the video.

This sound is definitely new to Rilo Kiley and it speaks of things to come. As the music industry, changes so is Rilo Kiley. And you can’t help but get a “sound upgrade” when you work with producers like Mike Elizondo. Let’s hope the rest of the album don’t letdown and that they don’t lose their integrity as a band.

the final debacle

July 13, 2007

the final debacle that came and swept over.

everything will go downhill from here.

amdist the saturation that was the 90’s pop scene, there stood strong, fiona apple.

the first taste, is one of my all time favorite tracks off tidal.

sleep to dream, opens the album.

and then of course her breakout song, criminal.

fiona apple reigns supreme in all sulleness. she garnered herself public attention by saying “the world is bullshit..” when she went on stage to receive an award. not one to shy away from her past, having been raped in her younger days, she transcends all angst and raw emotions. maybe all geniuses are raped for a reason.

so remember defore the spice revolution took place, there was fiona apple.

today’s music fix: Oi Va Voi

Yesterday’s Mistake.

Oi Va Voi has just released their new self-titled album. Blending Middle Eastern chants and beats with ambient and electronic beats. you get a real nice blend of chilled and chilled out.

and it still eludes me how an artist such as Siobhan Donaghy fails to chart well on the charts. sometimes its not about the charts but it is, to keep that recording contract. in that context. nonetheless great music are meant to be appreciated and not well received sometimes.
