10 Items Or Less

June 17, 2007

now how do i begin this little review on this film called 10 Items Or Less.

10 Items or Less, basically revolves around a washed up actor, Him meaning Morgan Freeman, thinking of taking up a role in a movie by an amateur director. he thus goes and does research on his supposed role at a supermarket in a small rundown town.

there he meets scarlett, the stunning Paz Vega, a quirky cashier who runs the 10 Items Or Less counter. from there the movie goes. a journey for both unlikely characters. and through that you kinda get a retrospective almost bordering documentary-esque movie.

the way the characters are played out displays how special this movie is. you have Morgan Freeman a legend in his own right, being himself and letting out certain facts about the film industry. then you have Scarlett this unpolished gem of sorts who has the most fucked-up life. what with the other cashier girl sleeping with her boyfriend the manager.  and the fact that customers who patronize the supermarket do not respect the 10 Or less Item rules imposed naturally by her counter.

not to give to much away, but this movie is quite a charming and funny movie. you get to see Morgan Freeman being humorous. Paz Vega who bares a striking resemblance to Penelope Cruz does not sell short in the portrayal of her character. she manages to inject elegance into a very chaotic character.

i like this movie for its honesty and very real characters. and also the fact that it is a very funny movie in terms of physical comedy. and the fact that there is the sprinkle of special appearances by actors like Bobby Cavanale and Danny DeVito. during the movie, the question posed by Scarlett to Him was ” if you could get 10 Items 0r Less, what would it be?”. and there is no sex between the both of them. that would be disgusting.

a good slice of atmospheric pop rock with haunting melodies and lyrics.

sophie ellis-bextor returns to the pop scene with a new offering Trip the Light Fantastic. after taking a 3 year hiatus to birth a child and after the release of Shoot From the Hip, a great but underrated album. the disco diva shows us why she deserves a piece of the pop british pie.

a little refresher here. sophie ellis-bextor first came unto the scene with the help of Dj, mixer and composer, Dj Spiller. their song, Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) was an instant hit with the clubs and to which launched sophie into mainstream pop stardom. riding high on the success of Groovejet, sophie released Take Me Home. her first official single of her own. Take Me Home was quite the hit with its groovy, hard thumping disco rhythm. it sealed sophie as a pop disco diva. soon after Take Me Home and Murder On the Dancefloor was released, Read My Lips her debut album was released.

Read My Lips charted well on the charts and put sophie out as a serious pop disco diva rivaling the likes of Kylie Minogue. soon after Read My Lips was released, sophie set to work on her next effort. in late 2003 she released Mixed Up World, the first single to be released from her second album, Shoot From the Hip. the song and album was subsequently met with lukewarm reception from the music world. only second single, I Won’t Change You charted a respectable #9.

3 years on and sophie releases Catch You a track she worked on with Cathy Dennis. Catch You was one of the best releases of 2007. with its its rock infused disco sound and driving chorus, it gave sophie a new sound. initial reaction to sophie’s new sound was good. and eventually gave Catch You a number #8 charting.

Me and My Imagination was later released right after Catch You. this song pretty much represents what Trip the Light Fantastic sounds. it is a light hearted ear catching pop disco ditty that is quite typical sophie sounding.

much of what is on Trip the Light Fantastic is quite good. this is a very typical sophie record not very much different from say, Shoot From the Hip. sophie once again tries to infuse pop, rock, disco and electronica into one album with a number of diverse tracks. on songs such as, the Sun’s On Us and Love is Here, you get the sort of rock pop feel while on songs such as New York City Lights, Me and My Imagination and If I Can’t Dance you get straight up disco.

but how this album differs from Read My Lips and Shoot From the Hip is that you get a more cohesive sophie. tracks on Trip the Light Fantastic sounds more put together nicely then Shoot From the Hip. with a more electro vibe to it on tracks such as China Heart and third single If You Go. its even possible to say that most tracks could be have the potential to chart well in the charts.

if there is one thing to say about Trip the Light Fantastic, is that Sophie Ellis-Bextor is here to stay. going on her third album, she has produced an album that is great sounding and pretty amazing visuals for the cover art too.

truly fantastic.
