it always nice to have feist around. her sound is one that soothes the mind and induces the imagery of nice things. so to say that she will be returning with her second full length album after let it die, my interest was immediately piqued.

let it die, was an album i stumbled upon while shopping at downtown HMV. it was pretty affordable so i picked it up on a whim. songs on it as i remember were tinged lightly with ambient and electronic sounds. it was lyrically smart and somewhat disco infused. she might have bleeped into your radars when she lent her song mushaboom to the lacoste parfum for men ad.

now on to the reminder. now it has always struck me as queer to put an artist like feist under the genre, folk. but now i understand why with this album. the reminder, sees feist re-embracing her folk roots after the amazing opener let it die and the follow-up, open season. though open season was just remixes and rarities, you get a gist of what her next would sound like.

the reminder, opens with “so sorry”, her plea to someone to stay. it is soft, soothing with just light guitar rifts and tambourines which is the basic composite of folk music. it is rightly confessional and a great opener for the album. the first song establishes the feel and sound of upcoming songs. standout tracks would have to be “sea lion woman” a homage to women who drinks tea. it is such weird song titles and the quirkiness of such track that makes the listener chuckles whilst midway through the album.

first single “my moon my man”, is one tantalizing track. from asking her man to stay to describing her man to take it easy on her. this song makes you tap along with the drums guitars and piano. kinda along the lines of mushaboom. it is catchy but still very loyal to its folk sound. a very good first single in my opinion.

at the end, the reminder is whimsical, confessional, quirky and pure feist. it is almost reminding you that feist is here and here to stay. it has its beats, down tempo tracks such as the park and very breezy sounds. it is almost the kind of record that you hear while reading under a tree in a park of lush greeneries (sadly not the botanical garden) and great weather. such is the power of feist to induce such an image.

something to cream your pants over.

feist comes back to us with new material.

A Scanner Darkly

March 3, 2007

i just have to mention this movie over here. its such a pity that this movie would never or would eventually make it but very much later. maybe i would pull a melanie oliviero on this one.

a scanner darkly, is an animated movie feature adapted from the novel of the same name. the principal stars of this movie are winona ryder, keanu reeves and robert downey jr. this movie though for the most part is animated, it is still played by real life human beings but added the animation touch. which works for the storyline of the film.

a scanner darkly is basically set in the future (about seven years forward) and it centers about the battle of drugs. this battle however takes on a very futuristic turn with keanu reeves( bob arctor) in the middle. caught up, confused and lost in the midst of the taking of the drug, Drug D. Winona Ryder’s character( donna hawthorne) is one that is of much mystery but at the end shows itself. Robert Downey Jr’s character ( james barris) is one hell of a mindfuck one. his character is smart, quick witted and very quirky. you’ll never find out at the end whether he is the good or bad. the movie plays out nicely as it unfolds slowly but surely.

this movie is smart, very engaging and keeps you guessing on the character’s next move. the animation totally fits well into the whole movie giving it an interesting viewing experience. at the end of it all it is a very harrowing and true story about the battle with drugs that we would have to face eventually in the future.

i do hope you guys get to watch this movie. and the promotional posters for this movie is one of the coolest around.

anyways the picture of the moment for me:

of dreams and girls

March 1, 2007

this is not to any interest.

but i thought jennifer hudson’s performance in dreamgirls was just ho-hum.

maybe it was just that i made up too much hype around her performance.

but she delivered at the right places during the movie.

to give her an academy award for that.

i did not think she was the best amongst the rest of the nominees.

but whoever said giving reese whitherspoon her academy in walk the line was justified.

i for one never thought she deserved that oscar outright.
