oh stephane!

February 11, 2007

frustration attends to the feelings of viewers whilst watching the movie, the science of sleep. hence the title of this entry is entitled “oh stephane!”. this two words came rolling out of my mouth while i was lounging in the back, earphones plugged into my ears. so you could only imagine how i looked like exclaiming these two words. thankfully i was in the comforts of home.

brief introduction. the science of sleep is basically about sleep. more specifically dreams, the dreams that we make. in this case, we take a look at the dreams of stephane a guy, who suffers from a sleeping disorder to which his dreams lapses into his reality. sometimes, more often than others, he, stephane can’t discern for himself his reality and dreams. both are run by different sets of characters. until he meets stephanie through a freak accident. this is where the love story develops. enough said.

the imagery for this movie, is larger than life. often showing to us what our dreams would look like in reality. gael garcia bernal plays stephane well and really does truly bring out the eccentricity of the character. stephanie, charlotte gainsbourg does bring out the intrigue of her character thus leaving the viewers to wonder what is so attractive about her.

i liked the way to script was written. both stephane and stephanie were very eccentric and intriguing characters. the script often touched on little details like the point where stephane says to stephanie if she feels the ends of her specs it feels like its part of her head. these little details gives the movie its charm.

bottom line is, this is a love story. but with the quirky dreams of stephane incorporated into it. this makes for very good movie watching for it piques interest. the effects and the different characters of stephane really gels well with the whole movie. at the end, the ending is one that is bittersweet and left in the hanging. for in stephane’s dreams, he gets the girl, what about his reality?

oh stephane!

the bird and the bee

surburbia and normalcy are the words to best describe this two movies that i have recently watched.

little children talks about the lives of normal people doing normal things, cheating on each other. while sherrybaby is erin brockovich minus the success.

while both movies deals with really raw emotions protrayed by the lead characters, the actors on these movies really truly do shine and bring the best in their given characters.

kate winslet plays a suburban housewife cum anthropologist who struggles with the fact that she does not want to be a housewife and carries on an illicit affair with a father who has his own struggles. kate winslet’s acting was subtle yet was enough to carry on the message the character was supposed to.

maggie gyllenhaal plays a fresh out of jail ex-convict sherry, trying to put her life back and reconnect with her child. this i feel is typical maggie gyllenhaal role. she is seen once again exposing herself in various ways. but maggie has definitely brought out the role of sherry well.

running with scissors is the movie adaptation of the thoroughly confessional memoir of the same name by augesten burroughs to which the book is based on.

the movie did try, i must say, to stay close to the book. but the points where it mattered in the book did not present itself in film.  which was kind of a letdown.

once again evan rachel wood was great in the movie, maybe i am just biased but she was really good. totally not how i envisioned natalie to be (the character evan rachel wood plays).

but you could say that running with scissors is along the same lines of the royal tenennbaums. quirky, sentimental and downright messed up.

triple whammy for you.
