the 29th Day of Celebration
October 30, 2006

my only rant would be the lack of professionalism of the servers. and i guess this cannot be registered as a complaint because i was not wholly unhappy with the servers. it is just that it seems that every restaurant (be it fine-dining or the like) seem to be caving into the trend of hiring people of different nationality to do the work.
ambience was the key factor or should i say the highlight of the evening. the quaint surroundings, the dim lightings and of course the company.
the day of celebration truly was a day that did not feel like a day. but of course monetary spendings were once again over the limit. and at a restaurant like that it was not much of a surprise.
all in all, intimacy in a quiet environment was the icing on the cake that never really was there or even sold.

the crown, the fondue pot, the gloves and the day in honour of.

today’s review comes in the form of the book extremely loud and incredibly close.
i know i have mentioned this book a few posts back but here is the full review.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is what i call a “drug-book”. it is an addiction in itself and should be consumed in moderation. this book revolves around a boy named Oskar Schell. having lost his father in the 9-11 attacks, this book is basically him trying to find or connect with his lost father once again.
The interesting part about this book is that, it is a very unconventional book. unconventional in a way that this book is not just words. it has pictures (not the kiddish sort) knick knacks like edited portions of articles. so in a way, this book really sucks you in to the world of oskar itself. it does not veer into the absurd but is very engaging and keeps you wanting to flip the pages.
i would definitely say read this book if you have time on your hands because it is a very good companion.
jonathan safran foer has outdone himself with this one.
raincheck
October 23, 2006

“been trying to travel, but my ways are going nowhere”
i often wished that the expression “take a raincheck” could be used in a more literal sense instead of a casual term. because saying it is just so easy while meaning it just is a whole new different ball game.
how nice life were as light and casual as saying “i’ll take a raincheck”. then after saying that you actually do take a break or just go away. cos the jetplane or that simple getaway do look very appealing when set right in front of the face.
long bus journeys would have to suffice for my penchant need to want to travel now. but it just does not compare! the thrill of air travel excites me to the point where i just want to buy any old ticket of the market and get on the plane. i, of course would be meticulous about the plane i’ll be getting on. from singapore to newark on a Airbus A345 would be nice or from singapore to paris on the new Boeing B773ER would be grand. but of course these illusions would never materialise. not anytime soon though.
anyways. rainchecks and departures have been swimming around in my mind hence.
reviews are coming up!
restricted fauna in a bouquet
October 21, 2006

time buys the owner an escape to another type of delirious state.
in another fashion she aired out her laundry for everyone want to see. in another we would never know who was she referring to, who was she talking about. but does that bother. somehow.
in other fashions, things are always put across. be it the blatant finger that is pointed right in your face or the verbal accusations that are said daily against you. the fact is that you have to deal with such changing fads and duds. no one instructs or leads you to come to a fashion exodus on seeing through such trends. you have to look into the patterns, analyse with utmost open-mindedness and see to it that it does not affect and eat you up. for when it does, the exodus dissolves and you are at the bottom of the hill calling out for hansel.
at this point of time, humour is the key. humour is the underlying factor for hiding. humour masks pain creates wonderous fronts for you to hide behind. it misleads so badly that it distraughts the mind. but going on with this just makes it all the more better.
hence this post is called, restricted fauna in a bouquet.
she grooves
October 19, 2006

she grooves!
extremely loud and incredibly clos is going on great. its finally a book i can finally settle down to. i have been reading it and i just do not want to finish reading it too quickly. i want to slowly enjoy the different parts of it. Oskar is such an endearing character. and its so nice to see a novel so engaging in text and pictures. i’d expect this book to be adapted into a movie soon. just like jonathan safran foer (the author) last book, everything is illuminated was adapted into a movie starring elijah wood.
so i would say, read extremely loud and incredibly close for its great wit, coming from the eyes of a seven year old. its interesting layout and enthralling storyline. trust me on this.
haven’t done a book review in months hope this suffices.

“like lambs to the slaughter”
the zest lessens itself as time passes. no more does strobe lights kindle the excitement of the feet, no more does the lure of alcohol releases the temporary high that induces bad and embarassing behavior. all in all, a quiet and hohum night.
the early morning getup allowed me to finish papermag’s un-hollywood issue. and i must say i am a highly satisfied reader of this issue. i never knew that penelope cruz had so much depth in her. and of course it made look forward to wanting to watch the science of sleep.articles and commentaries were varied and very engaging. from actors to upcoming movies to the moving into a new office space. from pictures to ads to amazing illustrations, paper is onehella good read! my morning yearn for those coffee beans were satisfied by the scanning of paper.

“HI I AM A UNI-GRADUATE! AND I WANT TO BE A FLIGHT ATTENDANT!”
does that immediatley turn heads? in the context of being a flight attendant, i think so.
book smarts does not equate street smarts.
book smarts does not equate good interpersonal skills.
whatever happened to earning your wage behind a desk?
you’d rather be cleaning the toilet in mid-air?
different people bring different things to the table. whatever happened to equal opportunities?

the post before
October 14, 2006

now thats the speeding train.
doing a quickie before i set out. and of course testing the boundaries of my new found home. and thats to say, i have not laid down upon the nitty gritty. its been a dry season for me kinda like the haze that blankets the whole of singapore. found i have not, things to review or preview. but soon i will, says the old man by the pond sitting on a lotus. nah that was just me. but you get the idea.
now the streets today was brimming, but not over the expected limit. and i’d have to say obvious factors were the apparent reasons (i.e: the haze) but i am not complaining. commercialism drives the people out of their burrows, just like cheese drives the mouse out of its mouse hole. now that was a hollaback to tom and jerry.
prices tagged to pieces of clothings are signals that should be heeded wisely. cos when the cash register goes “ka-ching!”, so does the bank account, when it dips in amount. but make no qualms about spending money that you have worked so hard on and of course preen that image you have worked on so diligently. heh that was a reference to check out “the aspiring gardener” of sorts. and of course do not leave them ham around for it is not wise. god knows why.
words of wisdom. check pack in a while.
celebratory,premiere, new home
October 12, 2006

upheaval it maybe but temporary that is still undecided. i guess you could say it was the lure that ultimately made me sign for wordpress, the pure simplicity of it and maybe just maybe, the craving for a new beginning of sorts.
so here i am, in the new home and this is my celebratory, premiere post.
cheers.

apparently preen is the new stripper.
just had to mention that.
ghosts
October 9, 2006
thats the whole idea!
to take carpe diem and place it in your palms and slowly analyse it for what it is. okay, there is some sinister cloud hanging above my head. the eyes feels dilated, the body feels sore and weak. then the questions raises itself in my head. oh i do not want to go there. let’s play slow motion for one day so you could realise what an asshole you have been.
i know i have been plugging alot about siobhan donaghy in my posts. but i can’t help but feel a tinge of anticipation each time she does something new. her second album is long overdue and she has been keeping her fans on tenterhooks by only handing out snippets of what she is currently doing. head on down to her myspace to listen to the new track, ghosts. this tracks boasts a very typical question, how is she gonna perform this live? hmm. that is cause for a pause.
the track weaves weird african chants and a wicked drumbeat. often, her voice is rarely heard, more like a background to the song. but somehow it meshes together to produce quite the rare siobhan track. but for those loyal fans who bought her first effort would often associate the song to suasex (a song that too weaves, snippets of a spanish telemarketer’s conversation with another person). if you ever get the chance to listen to suasex you would know what i mean. but yeah, i was one of those who associated ghosts with suasex.
siobhan donaghy is definitely making inroads in her own little way. and i do hope that parlophone is truly taking their time to groom her.
another return i’m looking forward to is, the return of all saints. their comeback single, rock steady is quite the catchy and a relatively strong comeback song.
